Aaron Sorkin is going back to the company he already put on screen, this time from the side of the people who walked documents out the door. The Social Reckoning is scheduled for US theatres on Friday, 9 October 2026. Sony Pictures is releasing it through Columbia. An India date, a runtime and a CBFC certificate are not yet confirmed in the materials we used.

Verification note: Sony Pictures’ film page says “exclusively in theatres October 9” and describes a 2026 drama. Wikipedia, citing the release plan, dates the US opening to 9 October 2026. Written and directed by Aaron Sorkin. Cast billed by Sony: Mikey Madison, Jeremy Allen White, Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen, Bill Burr and Jeremy Strong. Music is credited to Alexandre Desplat in secondary listings. We are not adding plot points beyond Sony’s own synopsis.

A film page with one date, a credit list, and a clear “India not yet confirmed” line is the opposite of a rumour blog. We build those hubs with web development and digital marketing.

Date and where to watch

  • United States: Friday, 9 October 2026, theatres, Sony Pictures Releasing / Columbia Pictures
  • IST: Friday evening on the US East Coast is Saturday early morning in India. No confirmed India show time exists yet, so do not convert a guessed American evening into a PVR slot.
  • India theatrical date: not yet confirmed
  • Streaming date: not yet confirmed. The billing is theatrical.

Tickets, when a cinema near you lists the film, belong on that cinema’s site or on a licensed box-office app. A Google Drive link is not a screening. The Social Network, the 2010 film this is billed as a companion to, is already available through ordinary rental and subscription channels in many countries. Rewatching that legally is the only “prep” this page will suggest.

The story Sony is willing to print

Sony’s synopsis says the film is inspired by true events and by the whistleblower at the centre of the social-media reckoning. It calls the script an Aaron Sorkin original and a companion piece to The Social Network. In the synopsis, Frances Haugen, played by Mikey Madison, is a young Facebook engineer who enlists Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz, played by Jeremy Allen White, and the journey ends in the disclosure of internal material. Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen, Bill Burr and Jeremy Strong are billed around them. Sorkin writes and directs. Producers on the Sony page include Todd Black, Peter Rice, Stuart Besser and Sorkin.

That is the public shape. Court records, the Journal’s own series, and Haugen’s 2021 Congressional testimony are the documentary record if you want the non-fiction version. This film is a drama. It will compress, invent scenes, and cast famous people as real ones. Do not treat a trailer line as a finding of fact about a company, and do not treat this blog as a review of a film that is not out. We have not seen it. Nobody writing in late September 2026 for a general audience has a finished public cut to judge.

Names worth keeping straight

Mikey Madison plays Haugen. Jeremy Allen White plays Horwitz. Jeremy Strong is billed separately; he is not the reporter. The Social Network’s Jesse Eisenberg / Mark Zuckerberg story is the earlier film. Whether Strong or anyone else plays a specific executive is not something we will infer from a billing order. Wait for the studio to say so, or for the film to arrive.

The Friday it opens into

9 October 2026 is a crowded North American Friday on industry calendars, with other titles dated alongside it. Those films have their own pages when we have a reason to write them. In India, the surrounding weeks belong to films already dated locally, including Drishyam on 2 October and the Dussehra cluster of Jailer 2 and Ranabaali in mid-October. The Social Reckoning does not push those dates around. If an Indian distributor later announces a Friday of its own, that notice replaces this paragraph’s “not yet confirmed”.

Search interest will spike on Haugen’s name, on Sorkin’s name, and on “is it a sequel”. The accurate short answer: Sony calls it a companion piece, not a numbered sequel. It is about a later episode in the same company’s public history, told as drama.

How newsrooms and brands should cover the opening

Lead with the Friday and the country. “Out on 9 October” without “in US theatres” will be read in India as a local release. It is not one, yet. Do not publish box-office ranks on Friday morning IST. The US West Coast will still be in Thursday night. Do not publish a “leaked ending”. You do not need it, and your readers do not need a crime dressed up as a recap.

If you are a brand buying opening-weekend ads, the US Friday is 9 October and the Indian audience for an English-language adult drama is a different buy. Ask the distributor whether an India date exists before you localise the key art. A Diwali social post that assumes this film is the festival release will be wrong. The Diwali Sunday, 8 November, is a month later and is tied, in Indian trade reports, to a different film’s domestic target.

A coverage note for the opening Friday

File the US date, the director, and the two lead roles. Then stop until you have seen the film or until Sony says something new. The non-fiction spine — a Facebook engineer, a Wall Street Journal reporter, documents that became a public reckoning — is already in Sony’s synopsis and in the journalism of 2021. Repeating that spine is fair. Inventing scenes, quoting dialogue you have not heard, or declaring that the film “proves” a claim about a company is not. It is a drama. Companion piece is the studio’s phrase. Use it. Sequel is the word fans will type. Answer that search by explaining the difference in one sentence, which this page already does.

India desks should resist the Friday-morning traffic spike that assumes a local release. Publish “US theatres, 9 October 2026” in the headline if your readers are in India. Add the India date only when a distributor announces one. Until then, the honest service is to say not yet confirmed and to point people at The Social Network if they want the earlier story legally. Do not embed a full film. A trailer from Sony’s channel is the asset you are allowed to point at.

The same week in India belongs to other openings, including films dated in early and mid-October on their own pages. A reader who wants a Diwali booking is a month early if they use 9 October as their festival night. Diwali is 8 November. Send them to the right week rather than stretching this premiere to fill a calendar slot it does not occupy.

Hold the billing in one place so you do not mix the Jeremys. Madison is Haugen. White is Horwitz. Strong is a separate billed actor, not a confirmation of which executive he plays. Mosaku, Gilpin, Magnussen and Burr complete the names Sony printed. Desplat is reported for the score in secondary listings. Sorkin writes and directs. If a poster adds a name that is not on Sony’s page, leave it off your recap until the page catches up. Credits change. The Friday in US theatres does not, unless Sony moves it.
