The Reserve Bank’s next policy meeting is already on the statute-backed calendar, which is more useful than a weekend of rate guesses. The Monetary Policy Committee meets on 5, 6 and 7 October 2026. That block is in the schedule the Bank published on 23 March 2026 under section 45ZI of the Reserve Bank of India Act, and the August resolution repeated it: the next meeting is 5 to 7 October. The decision itself is not knowable until the Committee votes. This page is the date, the people who sit on the Committee, and where the text will appear.

Verification note: RBI press release 2025-2026/2306, 23 March 2026, and the resolution of the 3–5 August 2026 meeting, which states that the following meeting is 5–7 October. The hour of the 7 October statement was not announced in those documents. Governor Sanjay Malhotra chaired the August meeting. This page does not predict the repo rate.

Dates in IST

The meeting is in India. The clock is IST. There is no conversion to get wrong, and there is still a missing minute.

  • Meeting: Monday 5 October through Wednesday 7 October 2026
  • Statement: customarily on the final day. The exact clock for October is not yet confirmed. Check rbi.org.in on the morning of 7 October
  • Press conference: follows the resolution when the Bank holds one, as it did after the August meeting. The October conference time is not yet confirmed
  • Minutes: the Act requires minutes. After the August meeting the Bank said minutes would be published on 19 August, fourteen days later. A similar lag after 7 October would point at 21 October, but that date should be read from the October resolution itself, not assumed
  • Following meeting on the same annual schedule: 2, 3 and 4 December 2026

Anyone who publishes “RBI at 10 a.m.” is using a habit from past briefings. Habit is not the October notice. Wait for the Bank.

Who is in the room

The MPC has six members. The August 2026 resolution says the meeting was chaired by Governor Sanjay Malhotra and attended by Dr Nagesh Kumar, Saugata Bhattacharya, Professor Ram Singh, Dr Poonam Gupta, and Indranil Bhattacharyya. That is the composition the Bank itself printed in August. If a member is replaced before October, the October resolution will say so. Do not invent a vacancy.

The Committee votes on the policy repo rate and the stance. The Governor has a casting vote if there is a tie, under the Act. The resolution records how each member voted. That paragraph is the fact. A columnist’s advice the week before is not. External members and RBI members can disagree in public in the minutes. Disagreement inside the published minute is the system working, not a leak.

What the resolution contains

Read, in order: the rate decision, the stance, the vote, the growth and inflation assessment the Committee chose to print, and any liquidity or regulatory lines that are easy to miss because they are not the headline rate. The Governor’s statement and the edited press-conference transcript are separate documents. They explain. They do not outrank the resolution if a word differs. Markets will move on the headline before the PDF is finished. A careful page quotes the PDF.

The August resolution is the latest completed meeting as of this writing. It is background, not a forecast of October. Commentators in the Indian press have argued about whether the Committee might wait until December. That argument is opinion. The only scheduled fact is that the Committee will meet in October and can decide what it decides.

How to follow 7 October

Use rbi.org.in. The resolution, the Governor’s statement, and the data tables appear on the monetary-policy page. Social posts that claim an early copy are either recycled August text or false. The Bank does not release the decision to a private channel first. If your page needs a number, take it from the resolution and write the time you fetched it.

Indian television will carry the press conference if the Bank holds one. A summary ticker is not the vote split. The vote split is a sentence in the resolution. Household borrowers looking for an EMI change should wait for their own bank’s announcement; the policy rate is not an automatic retail rate. This page does not calculate an EMI.

What sits next to this meeting

The US Federal Reserve’s next scheduled decision is 28 October, three weeks later. The IMF and World Bank meetings are in Bangkok from 12 October, the week after the RBI. Those are different institutions. A sentence that says “RBI followed the Fed” cannot be written on 7 October about a Fed meeting that has not happened. Keep the calendars separate. The December MPC dates are already published, so a “surprise meeting” rumour needs a Bank notice before it is a fact.

A small checklist

  • Bookmark the monetary-policy page, not a forwarded image.
  • On 7 October, read the resolution before the panel discussion.
  • Record the vote, not only the rate.
  • Leave the statement clock blank until the Bank fills it.
  • Do not publish a rate forecast as if it were the decision.

What to read in the first ten minutes after the statement

When the October resolution posts, read the rate, the stance, and the vote before you read anyone’s headline. The vote tells you whether the decision was unanimous. The stance tells you the language the Committee agreed to wear until the next meeting. Liquidity lines and regulatory asides sit lower down and move specific markets even when the repo rate does not change. The Governor’s statement is an explanation. If a word in the statement is sharper than the resolution, quote both and say which document each word came from. The press conference, if it follows the August pattern, is a third document. Its clock is not yet confirmed. Do not advertise 10:00 IST as a fact.

Minutes come later. August’s resolution promised minutes on a named day fourteen days on. October will name its own day. A leak of how a member voted, before the minutes, is not the minutes. The six names printed in August — Malhotra, Nagesh Kumar, Saugata Bhattacharya, Ram Singh, Poonam Gupta, Indranil Bhattacharyya — are the last official attendance list. A replacement would be visible in the October resolution. Do not pre-write a resignation.

Household interest rates do not flip at the moment the PDF uploads. Banks announce their own changes, or their decision not to change. An EMI calculator that fires on a rumour will be wrong often enough to matter. Point readers at the resolution and at their lender. The December meeting is already on the calendar, 2–4 December, so a claim of an unscheduled meeting needs its own press release. The Fed’s decision is 28 October. It cannot be the cause of a decision the RBI announces on 7 October.

Section 45ZI is why the calendar exists in March rather than as a surprise in October. The Bank published six meetings for 2026–27: April, June, August, October, December, and February 2027. October is the fourth. The August resolution, the 62nd meeting in the Bank’s numbering, already pointed forward to these three days. Between August and October the data will change. The Committee’s job is to look at that data. Your job, if you are publishing a preview, is to point at the official series — inflation, growth, liquidity — and to stop before a fake precision about the vote. After the statement, the same series explain the decision the Committee actually wrote down. The order is the point. Forecasts that cannot be checked against the resolution a day later are not part of this guide.

The press release number on the March schedule is 2025-2026/2306, issued by the Bank’s communications department on 23 March 2026. The August resolution then repeated the October dates in its closing paragraphs, which is the later confirmation that the block had not been moved. If a subsequent press release shifts 5–7 October, that release replaces both. Until it exists, the meeting is those three days and the statement clock is the part that is still not yet confirmed.
