Nobel Prize 2026 Dates: IST Time for Each Prize

Nobel week is one of the few news cycles with a published minute, not just a date. The Nobel Foundation’s press release says the 2026 announcements run from 5 to 12 October, live on the official digital channels. Each prize has its own institution, its own room, and its own “at the earliest” time, except the Peace Prize, which is listed at 11:00 CEST without that hedge. This page is the full timetable in IST. The Peace Prize has a separate note because Oslo is a different committee and a different search.

Verification note: Times and venues are from nobelprize.org’s announcement press release and the prize-announcement-dates page, cross-checked with the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences note for physics, chemistry, and economics. “At the earliest” means the press conference can start later if the meeting runs long. Laureates are not known until the announcement. This page will not guess them.

The six clocks in IST

Sweden and Norway are on Central European summer time (UTC+2) through this week. India is UTC+5:30, three hours and thirty minutes ahead. Add 3 hours 30 minutes to every CEST time below.

There is no announcement on the weekend of 10–11 October. Anyone posting “Nobel winner” on Sunday is early or inventing it. The economics prize is not one of the prizes Alfred Nobel established in his will. Its formal name is the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. The Foundation lists it in the same announcement week, and so does this timetable, with that name.

Who decides, and how the morning works

Five institutions are involved. The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet awards medicine. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awards physics, chemistry, and the economics prize. The Swedish Academy awards literature. The Norwegian Nobel Committee awards peace. They do not share a shortlist in public. Nomination records are sealed for fifty years. A newspaper “shortlist” in the days before the announcement is speculation unless the institution has said the name, which it will not have done.

The pattern on the day is stable even when the minute slips. The committee or academy meets, reaches a decision, and then holds a press conference. The words “at the earliest” are there because the meeting does not have to finish at 11:30. Indian afternoon plans should have slack. A 15:00 IST alarm for medicine is right; a 15:05 IST “they must have crashed” post is not. The Foundation says each announcement is broadcast on the official channels, with streams linked from the announcement page, including YouTube for several of the Swedish events. Watch those, not a repost that crops the citation.

What is announced, and what is not

The announcement names the laureates and, in a short form, the reason. The full scientific background papers are published by the awarding institution, often within minutes and sometimes with a short delay. The medal ceremony is not in October. It is on 10 December, the anniversary of Nobel’s death, in Stockholm and, for peace, in Oslo. Prize money, if you cite it, should come from that year’s Foundation statement. This page does not carry a figure because the relevant sentence is the October decision, not the December cheque.

How to follow the week from India

Use nobelprize.org. The page for each prize updates when the decision is public. Social posts that appear before the IST time above are either time-zone mistakes or fakes. A common fake is a screenshot with last year’s laureates and this year’s date. Check the year on the official page before you forward it.

Medicine, physics, and chemistry drive science-desk searches. Literature drives a different audience and a later clock, 16:30 IST, because Stockholm lists 13:00 rather than 11:45. Peace is the largest general-news search and is the next morning, in Oslo, at 14:30 IST. Economics on the following Monday is easy to miss because the week feels finished on Friday. It is not.

If a press conference starts late, the IST time moves by the same number of minutes. Update the visible clock rather than leaving 15:00 in the headline after a 15:40 start. The Foundation’s own phrase is the licence to do that.

What this week is not

It is not the announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize alone, and it is not a political endorsement of whoever is chosen. A newsroom can report the Committee’s stated reasons without adopting them. It is also not a betting market. Odds that circulate in the days before are not nominations. The institutions do not publish odds, and this site does not either.

A desk schedule that survives a late gavel

Put six alarms in IST and label them with the prize, not just “Nobel.” Medicine at 15:00 on 5 October, physics at 15:15 on 6 October, chemistry at 15:15 on 7 October, literature at 16:30 on 8 October, peace at 14:30 on 9 October, economics at 15:15 on 12 October. Literature is later because Stockholm lists 13:00 CEST, not 11:45. Peace is earlier in the Indian afternoon and is in Oslo, not in the Session Hall on Lilla Frescativägen. Economics is a Monday later, after a weekend when nothing is announced. A social post on 10 or 11 October that names a laureate is false or stolen from a future that has not arrived.

Every Swedish listing says “at the earliest.” Build slack into the live blog. If medicine starts at 15:22 IST, change the visible clock; do not leave 15:00 in the title as if the stream were early. The decision is the names and the one-sentence reason. Background papers follow. The medal ceremony is 10 December, in Stockholm for the Swedish prizes and in Oslo for peace. October pages should not be overwritten with December logistics. Nomination gossip is not a shortlist. The archives stay closed for fifty years. Odds are not nominations, and this site does not publish them.

Literature is the Swedish Academy’s Börssalen at Källargränd 4, and it is the afternoon slot, 13:00 CEST, 16:30 IST. Peace is Oslo. If a live blog uses one map pin for the week, it is wrong four times. The economics prize’s full name — the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel — is long and is the name the Foundation uses. Shortening it to “Nobel Prize in Economics” is common and slightly loose. Use the long name once, then a short label, so a reader knows it is awarded in the same week by the same Academy as physics and chemistry and is still a memorial prize rather than one of the five in the will.
