New Zealand’s Electoral Commission has a finished timetable, which is rarer than a vague “sometime in November” headline. The general election is Saturday, 7 November 2026. Voting places are open from 09:00 to 19:00 local time. Preliminary results are released progressively from 19:00 on electionresults.govt.nz. The official result is scheduled for Friday, 27 November 2026. The Prime Minister announced the date on 21 January 2026, and the Commission published the statutory timetable the same day.

Verification note: Dates and hours are from elections.nz and vote.nz, and from the Commission’s 2026 media kit. Advance voting starts 26 October. Overseas voting starts 21 October. Writ day is 4 October. This page does not endorse a party or a candidate.

IST conversions that match the New Zealand clock

On 7 November New Zealand is on daylight time, UTC+13. India is UTC+5:30. New Zealand is seven hours and thirty minutes ahead of India, so morning in Auckland is the small hours in Delhi, and the 19:00 preliminary drop is late morning in India.

  • Election day: Saturday, 7 November 2026
  • Voting places: 09:00–19:00 New Zealand time, which is 01:30–11:30 IST
  • Preliminary results: progressively from 19:00 New Zealand time, 11:30 IST
  • Advance voting in New Zealand: from Monday, 26 October
  • Overseas voting: from Wednesday, 21 October
  • Official results: Friday, 27 November 2026
  • Last day for the writ to be returned: 3 December 2026, subject to recounts

Enrolment has its own cutoff. The Commission’s table says the last day to enrol is Sunday, 25 October. Anyone who enrols after writ day, 4 October, casts a special vote. Those are two different rules. A person can still be voting on election day on a special vote and not be in the preliminary ordinary total.

What the election is

Voters elect a parliament under the mixed-member proportional system: an electorate vote for a local member and a party vote that largely determines the shape of the House. Electorate results and the party vote answer different questions. A party can lead the party vote and still lose individual electorates, or the reverse. Preliminary election-night figures are not the allocation of list seats. The official result, including special votes, is what the Commission declares on 27 November. List-seat maths before that declaration are commentary.

Parliament is dissolved on 1 October 2026 under the published timetable. Writ day is 4 October, when the Governor-General directs the Commission to conduct the election. Nominations close at noon on 8 October. The regulated advertising period ends on 6 November, and signs are to be down by midnight. None of those steps is polling. Only 7 November is election day, plus the advance window that begins on 26 October.

Advance votes and special votes

The media kit says voting in New Zealand runs from 26 October until 19:00 on election day, and overseas voting from 21 October. Advance votes are ordinary votes cast early. Special votes include people who enrolled late, people voting outside their electorate, and overseas voters, under the categories the Electoral Act sets. Preliminary results on election night are dominated by ordinary votes counted that day. Special votes are in the official result. In recent New Zealand elections the special-vote block has been large enough to move a seat. Do not treat a one-seat election-night majority as durable until 27 November. That is a counting fact, not a preference for any party.

How to follow results

The Commission’s results site is electionresults.govt.nz. Preliminary figures start from 19:00 New Zealand time, 11:30 IST, and fill in as counts arrive. The official declaration is 27 November. Recounts, if sought, sit between the declaration process and the return of the writ. The media kit says the writ’s last day is 3 December, subject to recounts. Parliament’s own timeline page matches the 7 November and 27 November markers.

From India, the useful appointment is Saturday 11:30 IST, not Friday night and not Saturday evening. By Saturday evening IST the preliminary count has been public for hours. If you are writing a headline at 12:30 IST, say “preliminary.” If you are writing on 28 November, you can cite the official result, and you should still note any recount application the clerk’s process has not yet closed.

What the timetable is not

It is not a campaign calendar of debates, and it is not a poll. The Commission does not publish voting-intention surveys. News outlets do. If you quote one, name the pollster and the dates. This page quotes none. Candidate names are not listed here because nominations closed at noon on 8 October and the public roll of candidates should be read from vote.nz rather than copied into an article that cannot see withdrawals.

Why the date is easy to mis-file

7 November is the same week as other global political dates, including the United States midterms on 3 November. They are not connected. New Zealand’s count will not appear on a US dashboard, and a US Senate call says nothing about a Wellington electorate. Keep the results sites apart. The same discipline applies to Brazil’s October rounds and to Bulgaria’s presidential Sundays. Each country has one official feed.

See also how to check election results, Brazil’s 25 October runoff window, and the Austin Grand Prix weekend, which sits in late October while New Zealand advance voting is about to start. A results page with a preliminary-versus-official label is a product decision; web development and digital marketing are the hubs.

Preliminary on the night, official on 27 November

New Zealand’s mixed-member system punishes a sloppy election-night sentence. The electorate vote and the party vote are on the same paper and answer different questions. A candidate can win an electorate and the party vote in that electorate can still favour someone else. List seats are then allocated from the party vote, with the special votes included only in the official result. On the night of 7 November, at and after 11:30 IST, you can say who is leading the preliminary ordinary count. You cannot honestly say the final shape of Parliament. The Commission has already named 27 November for that declaration. Use the date. It is not a delay. It is the timetable.

Enrolment rules are the other quiet source of special votes. The last day to enrol is 25 October. Writ day is 4 October; people who enrol after the writ cast a special vote. Advance voting from 26 October, and overseas voting from 21 October, will already have banked a large share of ballots before Saturday. Those advance ordinary votes are in the preliminary count. Specials are the remainder that waits. If you say “half the vote is in” on election night, say whether you mean ordinary votes reported or the estimated total including specials. The Commission’s media kit is the glossary.

The writ’s last day is 3 December, subject to recounts, and Parliament’s timeline matches the public markers. A recount application is not a constitutional crisis. It is a step the Electoral Act allows, and it can hold the writ. Report it as a recount, with the electorate or the party vote named, and wait for the clerk’s process. None of this is a comment on which party ought to govern. It is the difference between a Saturday graphic and a Friday three weeks later.

Dissolution on 1 October and writ day on 4 October are already on the calendar by the time advance voting opens. They are not late surprises. Nominations closed at noon on 8 October. The regulated advertising period ends on 6 November, with signs down by midnight, which is the eve of polling in New Zealand and the morning of 7 November in India only if you forget the date line — midnight in New Zealand is 16:30 IST on 6 November, still Saturday eve locally and Saturday afternoon in India. The clean public markers remain: overseas voting 21 October, last enrolment 25 October, advance voting 26 October, election day 7 November, official results 27 November. Anything else is colour.

electionresults.govt.nz is the preliminary feed from 19:00 New Zealand time. The official declaration date on both elections.nz and vote.nz is 27 November 2026. Quote the feed you are looking at. A party-vote lead on Saturday is a preliminary ordinary count. A parliamentary majority that depends on one seat should be described as preliminary until special votes are in the official result. That is the Commission’s own split, and it is the split readers need.
