Halloween 2026: Saturday 31 Oct Date Guide

Halloween does not ask India for a gazette holiday, and it still fills search bars every October because costumes, horror premieres, school fêtes and brand drops all borrow one civil date. In 2026 that date is Saturday, 31 October. There is no official global start time. Cities, schools and housing societies set their own evening hours, and many set none at all.

Verification note: 31 October is the fixed civil date of Halloween (All Hallows’ Eve). In 2026 it falls on a Saturday. All Saints’ Day follows on Sunday 1 November. No Indian central-government holiday notification makes 31 October a public holiday. Local trick-or-treat hours in US cities are set by municipalities and are not yet confirmed here for 2026.

That US conversion surprises group chats every year. A Saturday-night party in New York is already Sunday morning in Bengaluru. If you are joining a family stream or a game night “on Halloween”, say which city’s evening you mean. The calendar date is shared. The party is not.

What the day is, briefly

Halloween sits on the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Saints. The popular layer — costumes, lanterns, horror films, children asking neighbours for sweets — grew in Ireland and Britain and then, most loudly, in the United States and Canada. Mexico’s Día de Muertos is a different observance that overlaps the same weekend and should not be pasted onto a Halloween banner as if it were the same rite. In India the day is a cultural import: schools, colleges, pubs, malls and streaming apps mark it. Temples do not. You can ignore it completely and miss nothing required of you.

How the Saturday is used in India

Karwa Chauth is Thursday 29 October, two days earlier. Diwali is Sunday 8 November, eight days later. Halloween sits in the gap, which is why Indian brands sometimes stack “post-Karwa, pre-Diwali” creative and then throw a pumpkin on it. The audiences overlap only partly. A North Indian family recovering from a nirjala fast on Thursday is not the same buyer as a college society booking a DJ for Saturday. Write two captions if you need both.

US retailers often start early “Halloween clearance” on 1 November and point the next campaign at Thanksgiving, which in 2026 is Thursday 26 November. That is a different article. For 31 October itself, the useful facts are the Saturday date, the timezone trap, and the absence of an Indian public holiday.

If you publish an event page, store the start in UTC, show IST beside it, and name the venue. A party at 7:00 PM IST in Indore is not “Halloween night US”. Say Indore.

A Saturday plan that does not borrow Diwali

If you are hosting in India, pick a start and an end and put them on the invite. “Saturday 31 October, 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM IST, our flat” is a party. “Halloween night” is a mood. End at a stated time so neighbours and children have a boundary. Food can be ordinary. A pumpkin is decoration, not a ritual requirement. If nobody in the group wants costumes, a film on a service you pay for is enough. You do not owe the internet a photograph.

Brands should count the weekend as one flight, not three. Thursday 29 October is Karwa Chauth in India. Saturday is Halloween. Sunday 1 November is a normal Sunday and, in the Christian calendar, All Saints’ Day. A single creative that says “spooky Karwa” insults the fast and confuses the sale. Run the Karwa edit on Thursday for the cities that keep it. Run a separate Saturday edit if you actually sell costumes or sweets. Take both down on Monday. US buyers are still on daylight time, so their Saturday evening is your Sunday. A customer-care shift that thinks the US party is “tonight IST” will reply a day late. Write the shift in EDT and IST on the rota.

Schools that schedule a fête should say what is banned: anything gory, anything that mocks a community, anything that needs a real weapon as a prop. A cardboard sword is a craft. A kitchen knife is not a costume. Send that line to parents on Monday 26 October so the argument happens at home, not at the gate.
