OCPP in practice: what the "central system" actually has to do
OCPP runs over a persistent WebSocket connection between each charge point and your Central System Management Software (CSMS). The CSMS has to hold that connection open for potentially thousands of chargers simultaneously, process BootNotification and Heartbeat messages to know a charger is alive, issue RemoteStartTransaction/RemoteStopTransaction commands from the driver app, and log MeterValues at intervals for accurate energy billing. OCPP 1.6-J is still the most common version deployed on Indian hardware today; OCPP 2.0.1 adds device management and smart-charging profiles that matter once you operate at scale. A CSMS built for one version cannot silently support the other — version negotiation has to be explicit.
