On the evening of 8 November 2026 the question in most Indian family groups will not be whether Diwali has arrived. It will be whether the lamp was lit inside the overlap of sunset and Vrishabha lagna, or merely “sometime after dark” copied from a cousin in another state. Diwali Lakshmi Puja 2026 is on Sunday, 8 November. The muhurat is local. A single clock for the whole country does not exist.

The Sunday date, and why Chhoti Diwali shares it

The shape is the part people mis-print. In many years Chhoti Diwali is the day before the main night. In 2026 the chaturdashi yields to amavasya on the 8th itself, so the pre-dawn bath associated with Narakasura’s defeat and the evening Lakshmi Puja sit on one calendar date. Govardhan does not fall on Monday the 9th. Because amavasya continues past noon on the 9th, the shukla pratipada morning used for Govardhan arrives on Tuesday the 10th. A five-day rubber stamp that says “7 Chhoti, 8 Diwali, 9 Govardhan, 10 Bhai Dooj” is last year’s geometry.

City muhurats you can plan around

Vidhata’s 2026 table, which computes sunset, pradosh and Vrishabha for each city, gives these overlaps. They are planning figures from that computation, not a government standard.

• Delhi: sunset 5:30 PM; Lakshmi Puja overlap 5:55 PM to 7:50 PM IST (about 116 minutes)
• Mumbai: sunset 6:01 PM; overlap 6:27 PM to 8:27 PM IST
• Kolkata: sunset 4:54 PM; overlap 5:20 PM to 7:19 PM IST
• Chennai: sunset 5:39 PM; overlap 6:07 PM to 8:08 PM IST

Kolkata finishes the recommended window before Mumbai has even started it. That is longitude, not a mistake in the forward you received. India uses one civil clock and several ritual clocks. If your parents are in Lucknow and you are in Hyderabad, each house follows its own sunset. Lighting the lamp “together on a video call at 7:00 PM” may be inside one city’s window and outside the other’s. Agree on that before the call, or each house keeps its own minute and you talk afterwards.

What the overlap is asking you to do

The recommended period is the part of Pradosh Kaal — the evening after local sunset — during which Vrishabha, a fixed sign, is rising. The traditional reading is that a sthira lagna asks Lakshmi to stay rather than to pass with a movable sign. You do not need the first second of the window. You need to be inside it, with the lamp, the offering and the people who are actually present. Mahanishita, around midnight, is discussed in some tantric observances. It is not a substitute instruction for the ordinary household Lakshmi-Ganesh puja, and this page does not assign a midnight minute.

Homes typically place Lakshmi with Ganesha, and often Saraswati, on a washed platform, with a kalash, flowers, coins, and sweets such as kheer, batashe and kheel. The aarti and the recitation follow the family’s own text. We will not paste a mantra here as if it were the only valid one. Use the text your household already uses.

Fireworks, noise and the city order

Several state pollution boards and city administrations have, in recent Diwalis, limited cracker hours and banned certain categories. Those orders are issued close to the date and differ by city. As of this guide, a single 2026 national fireworks window is not yet confirmed. Before you buy a box, read the current order from your state’s pollution control board or your municipal corporation. A housing society’s own quiet hours can be stricter than the city order. Settle that in the building group on Saturday, not during the puja.

If your society allows fireworks, the usual request from paediatricians and from people with asthma is distance, a short window, and no bursting beside open windows. That is practical advice, not a ritual rule. The puja itself does not require a cracker.

Travel, shops and the Monday after

Sunday Diwali means Saturday 7 November is the heavy travel day into home cities, and Monday 9 November is not automatically a holiday. Govardhan is Tuesday. Offices that close only on 8 November will have staff travelling back on Monday morning while amavasya is still current in the panchang, which matters more to observant colleagues than to the leave roster. Ask people which day they actually need. A Jaipur workshop, a Patna household preparing for Chhath, and a Mumbai trading desk are not on the same leave logic.

Retailers who stayed open through Dhanteras often take the Sunday evening off and reopen Tuesday. Publish that. Ecommerce brands should freeze creative that says “Diwali sale ends tonight” unless the coupon really ends on 8 November. The October Amazon Great Indian Festival and Flipkart Big Billion Days are earlier events. A November banner is a new promise and needs its own end time.

For cinemas, Sunday 8 November is also the India date producers have targeted for Ramayana’s domestic release, while Sony’s international date is Friday 6 November. If you are planning a family booking, those are two different clocks. Read the theatre listing for your city rather than the English trailer’s date slug.

How to write the time on a card

• Name the city: “Lakshmi Puja, New Delhi, 5:55 PM–7:50 PM IST, Sunday 8 November 2026”.
• Name the source in small type, and invite people to follow their own priest if the family panchang differs.
• Do not convert the Delhi window into “7:25 PM London” and call it a London muhurat. London has its own sunset. Diaspora homes need a panchang for the city of the house, which is why US tables sometimes show a different civil date.
• Separate the morning Narak Chaturdashi bath from the evening puja so guests do not arrive at noon expecting the aarti.

Search traffic on “Diwali 2026 muhurat” peaks in the last 72 hours. Pages that publish one invented minute get copied into WhatsApp faster than they can be corrected. A range, a city, and a source survive that copy-paste.

Printing the card without starting a family argument

Write the city in the first line. “Diwali Sunday 8 November, Lakshmi Puja in the evening” is true and still useless to a cousin who has to leave a shift. “New Delhi, 5:55 PM to 7:50 PM IST, source: a 2026 city computation of pradosh and Vrishabha” is something they can put in a calendar. If the card is for a housing society, add a second line that other flats may follow a different city of origin and that the society is not the panchang. The fight every year is someone treating a Delhi forward as a rule for a Chennai household that married into the building.

Sweets and gifts can be ordered for Saturday delivery so Sunday afternoon is free for the lamp. Couriers do not know your muhurat. A box that arrives at 7:40 PM in Delhi has missed most of the window. If you are travelling by train into a hometown on Saturday night, assume the evening of the 7th is the journey and the morning of the 8th is recovery, and that the pre-dawn Narak Chaturdashi bath may be the first thing the house does. Guests who arrive at noon for “Diwali lunch” are early for the puja and late for that bath. Tell them which of the two you are hosting.

Offices that close only on Monday 9 November are closing the wrong day for anyone whose observance is Sunday evening and Tuesday Govardhan. Ask. A single optional leave on the 8th, with a second optional day on the 10th for people who keep Annakut, covers more real practice than a mandatory fun event on Sunday afternoon that collides with travel. Retail teams are the exception: they may need every hand on Sunday daytime and a hard stop before the puja. Publish that stop. Customers would rather see a locked shutter with a time on it than a half-open shop that cannot find a bill book.
