Czech Senate Election 9–10 Oct 2026: IST Guide

Czech voters have two elections on the same Friday and Saturday, and the Senate race is only one of them. Presidential decision No. 117/2026 Sb. set Senate elections, municipal elections, and the Prague city election for Friday 9 October and Saturday 10 October 2026. The Interior Ministry’s deadline sheet for the Senate says a second round, if no candidate takes an absolute majority, falls on 16 and 17 October 2026. Polling hours for the Senate, in the voter information used by municipalities and in Aktuálně’s explainer, are Friday 14:00–22:00 and Saturday 08:00–14:00.

Verification note: The days come from the Collection of Laws text of decision 117/2026 and from the Interior Ministry timetable at mv.gov.cz. Hours come from the municipal Senate voting leaflet and from Aktuálně’s 2026 guide, which also puts the ordinary second round a week later at the same hours. One local leaflet repeats the first-round dates by mistake inside its second-round paragraph and then mentions 16–17 October only for a special case. Prefer the Interior Ministry: the default second round is 16–17 October. This page endorses nobody.

Clock times in IST

The Czech Republic is on Central European summer time (UTC+2) through 9–10 October. India is three hours and thirty minutes ahead.

• Friday 9 October: polls 14:00–22:00 local, which is 17:30 IST Friday to 01:30 IST Saturday
• Saturday 10 October: polls 08:00–14:00 local, which is 11:30–17:30 IST
• Count: commissions start when Saturday polls close, 14:00 local, 17:30 IST
• Second round, if needed: Friday 16 October 14:00–22:00 and Saturday 17 October 08:00–14:00, same IST shift

There is no Sunday poll. A reader who looks for results on Sunday morning IST is a day late for the first count. The Senate count starts Saturday afternoon in India, while municipal counting is on its own administrative track and should not be mixed into the Senate file.

What the Senate vote actually is

The Senate has 81 members elected for six years, one third at a time. Decision 117/2026 calls the election in districts 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36, 39, 42, 45, 48, 51, 54, 57, 60, 63, 66, 69, 72, 75, 78, and 81 — 27 districts. Voters outside those districts do not have a Senate ballot this year. They may still have a municipal ballot, because the same presidential decision calls municipal elections nationwide, including Prague and the city districts.

Aktuálně reported 154 candidates in the first round across those 27 districts, 120 men and 34 women. That is a newsroom count of the registered field, useful as scale, not as a slate we are reprinting. Names, ballot numbers, and any withdrawal sit with the registration offices and on volby.cz. A candidate who leaves the race inside the legal window is struck under the rules the Interior Ministry summarises; votes already associated with a withdrawn name are handled by that rule, not by social-media consensus.

How a winner is chosen

The first round is an absolute-majority contest. If nobody has more than half the votes, the two leading candidates go to the second round a week later. The municipal leaflet states that rule and adds the special case: if one of those two drops out, loses eligibility, or dies before the second round, the third-placed candidate steps up, and the second round may then be held on 16–17 October. The Interior Ministry lists 16–17 October as the second-round dates in the timetable header. Read both together: the ordinary runoff weekend is 16–17 October, and the same weekend covers the third-candidate situation. Do not invent a third round. The Senate does not use one.

Ballot papers for the second round are not delivered to households in advance, the leaflet says. Voters receive the grey ballot and the official envelope in the polling station on the second-round days. First-round and second-round papers are different objects. Using the wrong one spoils the vote.

Municipal elections on the same days

Towns, statutory cities, and Prague are electing councils on 9–10 October as well. That vote uses its own ballot and its own counting rules. A party that wins a town hall has not, by that fact, won the Senate district that overlaps the town. Results portals will show both. Label the column. The Czech Statistical Office publishes running results on volby.cz once Saturday counting is under way. That site is the public feed. A party Facebook total is not.

How to follow from India

Open volby.cz at 17:30 IST on Saturday 10 October, not on Friday night, if you want Senate numbers. Friday night is still voting. Overseas and special arrangements are described in the Interior timetable; they do not create a second election date. For the second round, repeat the same hours on 16–17 October only in districts where the first round failed to produce an absolute majority. Other districts are finished.

Senate districts and town halls on one weekend

The practical mistake is a single results widget labelled “Czech election.” There are at least two elections. Senate votes happen in 27 districts, the odd-numbered series listed in decision 117/2026, and they need an absolute majority or a runoff on 16–17 October. Municipal votes happen across the country, including Prague, on the same Friday and Saturday, and they elect councils under a different ballot. A town can change mayor-level control, in the indirect way Czech councils choose their leadership after the count, without the Senate district that contains the town changing hands. If your page has one map, it will lie about one of the two races.

Hours are a second trap. Friday is an afternoon and evening poll, 14:00 to 22:00, and Saturday is a morning poll, 08:00 to 14:00. People used to a single Sunday in France or Germany will miss Saturday entirely or arrive after 14:00. In IST the Saturday close is 17:30, which is when volby.cz should start to move. Friday night in India is still Friday voting in Czechia until 01:30 IST. A “turnout at dinner” post in Delhi is a mid-Friday post in Prague only if you have done that conversion.

Second-round papers are handed out in the station, on grey stock, according to the municipal leaflet. Voters who kept a first-round ballot and try to reuse it will spoil the runoff. Mention that once, in plain language, if you are writing for Czech citizens abroad. And if a candidate who finished second withdraws, the leaflet’s rule brings in the third-placed candidate. That is a legal substitution, not a new first round, and the Interior Ministry’s dates for that weekend remain 16 and 17 October.

Aktuálně’s count of 154 first-round candidates, 120 men and 34 women, is a scale marker for the 27 districts, not a roster to copy. Registrations can still have been struck under the Interior Ministry deadlines if a defect was not cured. The public list on volby.cz the week of the vote is the list. Ballot numbers were drawn by registration offices; a low number is a layout fact. Counting starts when Saturday polls close, 14:00 local, 17:30 IST, and the statistical office updates the same portal for both Senate and municipal races. Filter the contest before you screenshot. A municipal majority and a Senate runoff are different headlines that will want to occupy the same push alert. Let them occupy two alerts.

Decision 117/2026 is one presidential act with three calls: the Senate in those 27 districts, municipal councils in towns and statutory cities, and the Prague council with its city districts.
